The Board of Directors of Optica (formerly OSA), Advancing Optics and Photonics Worldwide, recently elected 129 members from 26 countries to the Society's 2024 Fellow Class. Among those 129 members, our very own Materials Science & Engineering graduate advisor and Associate Professor in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Yuebing Zheng was selected.
Optica Fellows are recognized for their exceptional contributions to research, business, education, engineering, and dedicated service to Optica and the broader community.
“Congratulations to the 2024 class of Optica Fellows,” said Michal Lipson 2023 Optica President. “It is a pleasure to honor these members who are advancing our field and society. We are grateful for their exceptional work and dedication.”
Optica Fellows are esteemed members who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the progression of optics and photonics. The Fellow Members Committee, led by Chair Ofer Levi from the University of Toronto, Canada, reviewed 216 nominations submitted by current Fellows. With Fellows comprising no more than 10 percent of the total membership, the election process remains highly competitive. Candidates are recommended by the Fellow Members Committee and subsequently approved by the Awards Council and Board of Directors.
Dr. Yuebing Zheng was selected due to his years of work in pioneering contributions to nanophotonics and optical manipulation technologies, with wide-ranging applications in biology, health, energy, and information technology. They have been awarded the 2019 University Co-op Research Excellence Award for Best Paper, 2019 Department of Defense DURIP Award, 2018 Materials Today Rising Star Award from Elsevier Ltd, 2017 NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, the 2017 NASA Early Career Faculty Award, the 2017 ONR Young Investigator Award, and the 2014 Beckman Young Investigator Award. Yuebing is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a Senior Member of the Optical Society of America.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Zheng on this accomplishment!
